Quick Assistance in the Carinthian Nockberge Mountains

Alpin 1 is stationed in Patergassen during the winter season and provides rapid emergency medical assistance in the Carinthian Nockberge Mountains and the surrounding winter sports regions. The emergency medical helicopter is dispatched primarily to respond to skiing and recreational accidents, medical emergencies, and alpine rescue operations where rapid assistance is critical.

Thanks to its location in close proximity to major ski resorts, the crew can reach incident sites in Carinthia and neighboring regions particularly quickly. Together with emergency medical services, mountain rescue teams, and other emergency response organizations, Alpin 1 plays a vital role in providing medical care to locals and visitors during the winter season.

About the Base

Alpin 1 has been operating in Patergassen (Carinthia) during the winter months since December 2001. Its primary area of operation is the surrounding ski resorts. However, its scope extends beyond just ski resorts and high-alpine terrain; this base ensures rapid and professional emergency medical care throughout the entire region around Patergassen. Due to the base’s location, cross-border operations are also carried out in the neighboring federal states of Salzburg and Styria. Every year, the team also responds to major disasters and avalanche incidents.

New crew quarters were built in 2013. Since the base was established, nearly 6,000 missions have been carried out through 2026.

Field of Application

The high mountains in the mission area, combined with rapidly changing weather conditions such as strong gusts of wind and precipitation, pose a particular challenge for the crew.
