About the Base

Christophorus 10 is stationed at Linz Airport and primarily serves patients in Upper Austria. However, C10 is also frequently called upon for missions by the neighboring control center in Lower Austria. The base is staffed 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset. One of Christophorus 10’s primary medical focuses is the care of critically injured patients. A specially equipped trauma backpack is part of the medical kit. As Austria’s first emergency medical helicopter, Christophorus 10 has been carrying freeze-dried blood plasma for several years as a rapid and effective blood substitute. Due to its proximity to the major hospitals in Linz, patients are also frequently flown from surrounding hospitals to the city center.

Until April 1, 2001, the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) operated the “Martin 2” emergency medical helicopter in Hörsching; the base was then taken over by the ÖAMTC. Since then, the crew of Christophorus 10 has completed approximately 1,100 missions annually and is thus an essential part of emergency medical care for the population of Upper Austria.

Field of Application

Christophorus 10 carries out the majority of its missions in the central region of Upper Austria and in the Mühlviertel. However, the crew is also frequently called upon to conduct rescues in the Upper Austrian Pre-Alps and lake regions. C10 is also frequently dispatched by the control center in Lower Austria to carry out missions in the western Waldviertel and Mostviertel regions.
