9 Christophorus
Schnelle Hilfe für Wien und das Umland
Since 2001, Christophorus 9 has been on standby in northern Vienna to provide rapid emergency medical assistance by air. The emergency medical helicopter is dispatched to serious accidents, medical emergencies, and time-sensitive missions where every minute counts.
Thanks to its location, Christophorus 9 can quickly respond to calls both in urban areas and in the Vienna metropolitan area. The crew works closely with emergency medical services, fire departments, hospitals, and other emergency response agencies.
Profile
About the Base
The ÖAMTC emergency medical helicopter, based in Vienna, is crewed by a three-person team. The emergency physicians are provided by the Vienna Professional Rescue Service (MA70) and by hospitals in the Vienna Hospital Network. The pilots and emergency physicians are supported by flight paramedics, who are also provided by the Vienna Professional Rescue Service (MA70).
In the spring of 1991, an emergency medical helicopter took off from Vienna for the first time. Martin 3, a joint project between the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, began its missions from the Meidling flight operations center. After 10 years of air rescue operations managed by the Ministry of the Interior, ÖAMTC Air Rescue took over the emergency medical helicopter service for the Greater Vienna area in April 2001. It all began with a temporary base on the premises of Opel Austria in Vienna/Aspern.
A tent for the helicopter and a container for the crew served as the starting point for the airlifted aid that was often essential for survival. It wasn’t until the summer of 2002 that the Christophorus 9 team left its “temporary quarters” and moved into the newly constructed heliport next door. This facility not only offered sufficient space but also provided an ideal environment for successful missions in terms of technical equipment. After more than 25,000 missions launched by Christophorus 9 from Aspern, the Vienna emergency medical helicopter moved into its new home on the roof of the ÖAMTC Mobility Center on Baumgasse in early April 2017. The state-of-the-art new building is optimally designed to meet the needs of pilots, emergency physicians, and flight paramedics.
Field of Application
Christophorus 9 not only serves the federal capital, but also flies numerous missions in the Vienna area, as well as in the Marchfeld, the Weinviertel, and northern Burgenland.
